GOOD TO KNOW
A few limitations
This tool supports qpdf’s standard password-based PDF security handler. Certificate-based or proprietary DRM encryption is not supported. Damaged files or unusually large documents may also fail. Rewriting can invalidate digital signatures, and your browser needs enough memory for both the input and output files.
ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Does this work without a password?
Already-unencrypted PDFs can be checked and rewritten. For a password-protected PDF, you need the correct password. This tool does not crack or bypass passwords.
Are my PDF and password uploaded?
No. Decryption runs locally in your browser using qpdf compiled to WebAssembly. The document and password are not sent to a server by this tool.
Why might a PDF not unlock?
The password may be incorrect, the file may be damaged, or it may use a security handler this qpdf build cannot process. Try opening it in a trusted desktop PDF application with your authorized credentials and exporting an unprotected copy.
Will the unlocked copy preserve the original?
Your selected file is never modified. qpdf rewrites a separate copy, preserving the pages and document content it can read. Rewriting may change internal structure, and existing digital signatures may no longer be valid.
